Location

This home is part of the famous Mastic villages on Chios; a series of fortified villages built in the 14th century. Some are very impressive with their intricately painted houses. This so-called 'Mastichochoria' is an area well known for the production of mastic; the mastic tree's hardened resin, only harvested on Chios. It is a significant part of the local economy, and to protect this throughout history, the villages were built out of sight from the sea and surrounded by high walls.
