Villa celiera - pescara province

This delightful town, at 714 metres above sea level, is located in a beautiful position surrounded by fabulous landscapes. It lies on a small ridge on the slopes of Mount Bertona, close to the Voltigno plateau and within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.

Just outside the village are the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria di Casanova which was built in 1191 and was the first Cistercian community in Abruzzo. Although derelict and overgrown, the layout can still be discerned, especially with its mighty watchtower.

Being just minutes away from the plains of Voltigno with plenty of snow in winter, pursuits include cross-country skiing on well-groomed slopes, sledding and snow shoeing. In summer other activities include hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, mushroom foraging and hunting.

The economy of Villa Celiera is based on agriculture and animal husbandry and important food dishes include Maccherono alla Molinara, a substantial pasta dish with long dense strands typically served with a simple tomato, basil and pecorino cheese sauce; Patat alla cillarott which are thinly sliced potatoes, sautéed in olive oil with rosemary, bay leaves, dried chilli, salt and pepper; Zugotto cellarotto made from mushrooms, dried red peppers, wild garlic, ricotta, pecorino and fresh eggs. The town is also famous for the creation of arrosticini, a lamb skewer, that has become a favourite throughout Italy. All these tasty dishes are celebrated at local food festivals.

The 616 inhabitants enjoy access to a few amenities including well-known restaurants, bars, butchers, bakeries, pharmacy, post office and cash point.
