Marmaduke Furness, 1st Viscount Furness and 2nd Baron Furness, was a prominent member of society and chairman of his father’s successful iron and steel shipbuilding company, Furness Withy. By the end of World War I, Marmaduke Furness had amassed a fortune that had ranked him as one of the world’s sixth richest men. Furness purchased Hamels Mansion in 1919, adding to an already impressive portfolio of country houses. He owned the mansion and grounds for over a decade.
