Welcome to Barkham Road which for us is more than just a house. It has been our family home for over thirty years. What attracted us to Barkham Road was that the house has a lot of character. It retained many of the original 1920’s features such as the external balustrade over the front door, the original architrave and picture rails in the hallway and front living room and a working open fireplace also in the front living room. We loved the light and space provided by the high ceilings. During our time here we have made sure that any changes we made retained that original character.

Over the years we have made several significant changes to our home such as replacing all the main windows with high quality wooden double-glazed windows whose design closely matches that of the original house. We have extended the house with a single-story extension adding a new living room (with a recently fitted bi-fold doors) and guest bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. The extension also incorporates a loft above the bedroom and a good size garage with additional storage above. We have also upgraded the old lean-to across the back of the original house adding a slate insulated roof with two large Velux windows which bring light and space into the back of the house. We call this room our garden room and use it as our main dining area.

We love the garden which has been a place of relaxation for all of us and its size has enabled us to hold many large events with friends and family. The garden is also a haven for many varieties of birds including woodpeckers, nuthatches and goldfinches to mention a few and we have an abundance of insects and wildlife such as hedgehogs, slow worms and the occasional deer wandering through. There is also a wild pond which attracts frogs, breading newts, water-boatmen, dragonflies and water snails. In the garden there is a building which we affectionally call ‘the hut’. This was designed and built by us and over the years has been used for sleepovers, a summer room, a mini cinema (there is power and internet) a photo studio, a mini gym and was used throughout Covid as an office space.

Barkham Road has been our fabulous family home for over 30 years and we are sure the next owners will love it just as much as we have.
