Upper Swingley Coppice comprises about 1.9 acres in a lengthy narrow strip. A small stream originates near the southern end of the site and meanders down the centre of the wood, flanked by marshy terrain.

Originally, this area would have been dominated by alder and willow trees. However, in 1811, the Bockleton estate planted it as an ‘Ash bed, ’ likely to provide poles for nearby hop-yards. Consequently, while alder and willow still thrive in the marshy sections, the drier areas now feature massive, ancient coppiced ash stools adorned with mosses and lichens—a distinctive hallmark of the reserve’s history. The ground flora further attests to its antiquity, with abundant bluebells, primroses, and moschatel.

Additionally, smaller quantities of yellow archangel, meadow saffron, woodruff, red campion, twayblade, and early purple orchids dot the landscape. In the marshy zones, meadowsweet and water avens flourish, accompanied by marsh marigolds lining the stream.
