Property description

Land

Rickstock Wood is a large broadleaf woodland, with open farmland on two sides, woodlands on the third side, and fronting onto the minor road on the fourth side. Most of the woodland is dry and well drained, but towards the back of the wood there is large wetland area, with attractive ponds.

At the start of the wood there is a large parking area and wooden gate. From the gate there is a path which meanders through the wood until it reaches a clearing. The clearing is very flat and therefore very suitable for camping. It also has the potential for many other activities such as coppicing, firewood processing and green woodworking. The clearing is surrounded by rowan and silver birch trees with other species scattered around it.

Oak, ash, sycamore, rowan, beech, hazel, holly and silver birch can be found throughout the woodland with a great deal of ease. Some of the plants and flowers seen here include wild raspberry, primrose, bluebells, cow parsley, wood sorrel and many varieties of ferns and bracken.

Access: Rickstock Wood has a stoned parking area, shared with the adjoining woodland, accessed straight off the road, making the wood accessible at all times of the year with an ordinary car.

Public access: Despite the name of the area, Puleston Common, this land is not registered as common land, and there are no public access rights.

Sporting rights: Are understood to be included.

Mineral rights: Included

Official designations: In a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone, but there are no other official designations.

Covenants: In common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.

Wildlife: Within this woodland, there are many signs of wildlife. There are signs that fallow deer are present, and family groups can often be seen wandering through the wood, as well as sightings of pheasants and a tucked away badger sett. The wood is a haven for birds, and many different bird calls can be heard as you walk around the wood.

Towards the north western boundary there is a small area of wetland with some shallow ponds. This wetland area is very beneficial to the woodland as it contributes to the diversity of wildlife visiting the wood. Some of the wildlife seen and heard here include fallow deer, fox, rabbit, badger and pheasant. A variety of species of birds are also found in this wood, such as woodcock, buzzard, sparrow hawk, owl, woodpecker, jay and songbirds.

Boundaries: The southern and western boundaries are the edge of the woodland adjoining open farmland. The eastern boundary is the road. The northern boundary is indicated by blue paint marks on stakes and trees.

Local area and history: This woodland is a stone's throw from Newport and 13 miles from Telford. Nearby there is the Lilleshall Abbey ruins and the Aqualate Mere National Nature Reserve. Historically, Rickstock Wood has been quarried for sand/gravel. The remains of the quarry can still be seen in the shape of dips and mounds on the woodland floor. Nineteenth century Ordnance Survey maps show the shape of the quarry, which has been transferred onto our map below.

Photographs: Were taken in February and November 2023.
